Don Bolduc, the GOP Senate nominee in New Hampshire, last week told a crowd at a campaign event “that children are being told they can identify as anthropomorphic cats and use litter boxes in schools,” CNN reported on Saturday, October 29, 2022 (see story here).
“Guess what? We have furries and fuzzies in classrooms,” Bolduc told his credulous listeners. “They lick themselves, they’re cats. When they don’t like something, they hiss – people walk down the hallway and jump out,” he said.
“And get this, get this,” he continued. “They’re putting litter boxes, right? … These are the same people that are concerned about spreading germs. Yet they let children lick themselves and then touch everything. And they’re starting to lick each other.”
“I wish I was making it up,” concluded Bolduc. Don’t worry, dude, you are. None of it is true. Like Obama’s plan to nuke Charleston harbor, it’s internet b.s. swallowed by gullible people who lack critical thinking skills.
Bolduc might have an excuse. A former Army officer, he was wounded in Afghanistan. According to Wikipedia (here), he suffered a traumatic brain injury, and also has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I would simply observe that if John Fetterman of Ohio is too disabled to serve in the Senate, then so is Bolduc. In fact, aside from a speech impediment, Fetterman appears to be in better shape mentally than Bolduc is.
So you have a guy who has no business running for the Senate because he took a hard knock on the head (was he wearing a helmet?) and now believes an internet hoax that school kids pretend to be cats and use litter boxes. He’s not alone. Two GOP gubernatorial nominees, Scott Jensen of Minnesota and Heidi Ganahl of Colorado, and have going around saying that, too. (Were they wearing their helmets?)
How to explain this? I mean, where does a major political party get such nominees? From under the sink, obviously, but what happened to all the ambitious Republican politicians who, um, have their marbles?
Looking around, and seeing so many crazy candidates on the GOP side this year, I think the answer is respectable Republicans won’t run anymore. Their party is crazy, their voters are crazy, and they have reputations to think about. Some of them might want to practice law after politics, and this seems like as good a time as any to them.
