Scientists using a new satellite-based methodology predicted Greenland ice melt will raise sea level nearly a foot by 2100 in a study published on Monday, August 29, 2022 (read story here).
“A one-foot rise in global sea levels would have major consequences for coastal communities,” CNBC said, and would displace nearly 200 million people.
That’s already baked in, and doesn’t include sea level rise from other sources. Factoring in those, a multi-meter rise is “likely,” the Guardian reported (here). A meter is 39 inches; a 3-meter rise would be nearly 10 feet.
“Mountain glaciers in the Himalayas and the Alps are … on course to lose a third and half of their ice … while the west Antarctic ice sheet is also thought by some scientists to be past the point at which major losses are inevitable,” the Guardian said, then noted, “Warming oceans also expand, adding to sea-level rise.”
And if the East Antarctic ice sheet collapsed, sea level could rise by more than 150 feet. But this disaster could take 100 to 200 years to unfold, and we’ll all be dead by then, so who cares? Will you give up your RV, snowmobile, gas-powered leaf blower, and beloved ’65 Mustang for that?
