Romana Didulo (photo), a Phillippines-born resident of British Columbia, has decided to replace the Canadian and U.S. governments with a monarchy (see story here).
Didulo has proclaimed herself queen (see her website here). As a potentate with absolute power, she’s fashioning her government via decrees.
Here’s what her government looks like. Taxes, debts, and mortgages are abolished. Health workers who administer vaccines, and podcasters who distribute pro-vaccine information, will be put to death. News reporters who criticize her will get 30 years in prison (did she steal that idea from Putin?).
Her movement, a mix of QAnon and sovereign citizen, has about 60,000 followers who “want to use her decrees as law.” These people are cranks, but they’re deadly serious. One threatened to shoot up a school where kids were being vaccinated. And a real problem could arise if someone tries to enforce her “laws” by making “citizens arrests.” Sovereign citizens also have been known to kill police officers.
It doesn’t help that Didulo, like many cult leaders, claims to be appointed by God. Skewed religious beliefs inflame passions and incite irrational behavior like nothing else on earth.
The world is full of would-be Genghis Khans. You get to be a ruler by having an army and defeating those who oppose you. Didulo can’t replace the existing governments of Canada and the United States simply by demanding they let her rule.
For now, she’s queen of only her little band of loyal followers, and let’s hope she eternally remains so. But we should note and take seriously what they intend to do, should they obtain power to do it, and the full weight of law enforcement should be brought to bear to contain them; because if she acquired absolute power — Hitler, who also was a nobody, showed it can be done — we would lose our freedom and millions might die.
By the way, who ever heard of a king or queen saluting anybody or anything?
