I stumbled across this photo and decided to put it up because it’s so unusual. I don’t know if it’s been digitally altered. Maybe. I think it’s too dark for computer wallpaper; but the color, the composition, the base hidden in clouds, and cottony feel of the image make this photo in my view a classic. This view is from the Nepal side looking north. The black pyramid at center is Everest, and the peak to its right is Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain. In the foreground is the Nuptse ridge. It’s hard to comprehend how huge this uplift is, and even harder to imagine these rocks once were seabed, but they were. The Himalayas were pushed up by the collision of two tectonic plates beginning about 50 million years ago — and are still rising. (Click on image to enlarge.)
