The Bombshell Of The Week (seems like they come daily) is that Trump “tried to call a White House support staffer that has been speaking with the House select committee” and “could have corroborated” Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony (see story here).
If you and I did that, we’d go to prison.
Greg Kelly (screen capture, left), who used to fly Harrier jets from aircraft carriers for the U.S. Marines (bio here), and now bloviates for the disreputable rightwing Newsmax, isn’t a lawyer so maybe he doesn’t know this is a crime.
Or maybe he does, and is trying to cover Trump’s rump, in which case he’s making a mash of it.
To wit: “Greg Kelly, the Trumpiest host at ardently MAGA cable channel Newsmax, dismissed the blockbuster revelation that former President Donald Trump tried to call a witness set to appear before the Jan. 6 House committee. According to Kelly … this was much ado about nothing because the ex-president likely just ‘butt dialed’ that person.”
Yeah, sure. Right. Trump’s butt just happened to dial that number.
Daily Beast got it right when they pegged Kelly as a “cartoonishly pro-Trump host” (see story here), except I would substitute “apologist” for “host.” If he was a lawyer, this would get him laughed out of court. Even Trump has better lawyers than this, so don’t expect this to be his defense strategy if he’s indicted for witness tampering.
So how does someone come up with something this stupid? My guess is Kelly butt-dials all the time, so assumes everybody else does, too.
