Why I’m for the death penalty

You can put names on my reasons.

Timothy McVeigh, for example, the Oklahoma City bomber who murdered 168 people, including 19 kids, and injured 680 more with a truck bomb in 1994 and was executed in 2001.

Today’s name: Ricky Dubose.

He was convicted this month of murdering two prison guards during an escape, shooting both in the head, and last week a Georgia jury sentenced him to death (read story here).

Before committing that crime, he was doing 20 years for robbing and shooting a disabled veteran (see story here); and while on the run, he burglarized several homes (see story here), carjacked a construction worker (see story here), tied up an elderly couple and stole their car (story here), and shot at deputies during the chase that preceded his recapture (story here).

Dubose escaped with another inmate, a lifer, and they were objects of a massive manhunt. An armed homeowner ended their crime spree by holding them at gunpoint (photo below; read story here).

I won’t go into the pros and cons of the death penalty here. The D.A. described him as a “predator.” Others might prefer the term “desperado.” He’s so lawless and dangerous that society will be safer if he’s dead. It really comes down to that practical fact.

Update (6/27/22): Dubose committed suicide in his prison cell on Sunday, June 26, 2022 (story here).
