GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert rode her fame as a pistol-packing restaurant owner (photo, left) in Rifle, Colorado, to Congress, where her specialty is being obnoxious (see, e.g., article here).
I endorsed her Republican primary opponent (see article here) even before her restaurant poisoned a bunch of people at a rodeo (see article here).
Now, a group calling itself “American Muckrakers PAC” claims that before being elected to Congress, Boebert was a prostitute who had two abortions (see story here, press release below, and video). Yahoo News would only say the group is targeting Boebert and didn’t go into those particulars (see their story here).
These allegations (I don’t know if they’re true) are a bit awkward to handle for progressives, who are sympathetic to sex workers and support abortion rights, so they’re framing it as a hypocrisy issue. Like other Republican politicians, Boebert publicly opposes Roe v. Wade.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out in terms of election impact. I couldn’t find any polling on this primary race, but Colorado Public Radio reports that thousands of Democrats in her district are changing their registration so they can vote against her in the primary (see story here).
Update (6/25/22): After fact-checking, CNN is calling American Muckrakers’ allegations “false,” and reports the group has acknowledged being “sloppy” and admitted it published “inaccuracies.” See story here.
