South Dakota AG Jason Ravnsborg, who reported hitting a deer after killing a pedestrian (details here), won’t run for reelection (see story here).
Ravnsborg, a serial traffic scofflaw, escaped serious charges by pleading guilty to 2 misdemeanor traffic offenses and paying $500 fines for each.
Fellow Republicans in South Dakota’s legislature impeached him (see story here), and a state senate impeachment trial is scheduled to occur next month.
It presumably will go forward, as Ravsnborg has neither resigned nor formally withdrawn from the race.
Ravnsborg, a first-termer elected in 2018, would face primary challengers if he ran again. After the 2020 election, he joined other Republican state attorney generals in a frivolous lawsuit brought by Texas (details here), making him an election denier.
