Knowledgeable teams, including two members of Congress, use wargaming methods to deduce what might happen if China attacked Taiwan. They conclude that China would preemptively strike U.S. bases in Japan and Guam, eventually attack Hawaii and possibly San Diego, and the conflict would quickly escalate. (Note, articles I’ve read indicate recent Pentagon war games have shown the U.S. losing every time.) Bottom line the U.S. needs to strengthen its alliances in the region (an “Asian NATO” is suggested) and beef up its military forces to preserve deterrence.
