Rare tornado rips through Michigan town

A tornado ripped through a northern Michigan town, extensively damaging the business district (see photo below), on Friday, May 20, 2022 (read story here). Two people were killed and 44 injured. Both fatalities were senior citizens in a mobile home park.

Tornados are uncommon in the area. “We aren’t used to it up here,” a state official said, adding, “We don’t have sirens like in other parts of the country.”

Gaylord, Michigan, has a population of about 3,600 and a tourism economy (profile here). Because of its proximity to the Great Lakes, the area typically gets heavy snowfall, making it ideal for winter sports.
