Virginia’s GOP governor is no moderate

Glenn Youngkin is a wealthy businessman who got elected Virginia governor by pretending to be a moderate Republican (read how here).

He’s nothing of the sort. He immediately set about implementing the GOP’s radical agenda.

For example, on his first day in office he repealed school mask mandates, prompting lawsuits (see details here).

Then he set up a “tip line” for parents to squeal on teachers teaching “divisive subjects,” playing into the GOP’s efforts to stifle any discussion of race (see story here).

Youngkin is back in the news again, this time for trying to stifle protests at Supreme Court justices’ homes (see story here). I don’t approve of protesting at government officials’ homes (read my reasons here), but the problem is Youngkin’s attempt to set up an exclusion zone within a police perimeter in which no protest would be allowed violates the protesters’ constitutional rights. The local government, to its credit, refused to have anything to do with his scheme (see story here).

My point is, now that he’s been elected, Youngkin is no longer trying to walk a tightrope between Republican and swing voters, nor is he any longer posing as a moderate.

There is no such thing as a moderate Republican anymore. When you vote for a Republican, you get a Republican.
