Kane Tanaka, 32, is center foreground in this 1935 photo.
Looking at this photo 87 years later, you wouldn’t expect any of these people to still be alive.
But one was. Tanaka, lower right, died last week at age 119 years, 107 days. Only 1 person, Jeanne Calment, is known to have lived longer. Scientists have postulated the maximum lifespan for humans is between 115 and 125 years. Calment was 122 at her death.
Longevity is a crapshoot. Tanaka survived several serious illnesses, including cancer. Back in 1935, if you’d told Tanaka she’d become the second-oldest human ever to live, she’d probably have laughed at you.
She had paratyphoid fever then, and both her daughters died in infancy. Life must have seemed fragile to her. For many people, it is.
Will you be alive 75 years from now? Who knows? Read story here.
