GOP calls freeing wrongly convicted people “soft on crime”

“Republicans in the Judiciary Committee have spent months accusing President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees of being ‘soft on crime.’ They’ve … been accusing virtually everyone who comes before the Judiciary Committee of being soft on crime, even when it makes no sense,” Huffington Post says (here).

“Look at how they treated Nina Morrison,” Huffington Post continues. “She’s a nominee to a U.S. district court seat in New York. For the last 20 years, she’s been an attorney with the Innocence Project, where she has helped to get dozens of innocent people out of prison and off of death row. During her confirmation hearing last month, Republicans accused her of driving up violence all over America.”

Last month, Huffington Post reported (here) that Morrison (photo, left; bio here), “the senior litigation counsel at the New York-based Innocence Project,” has been involved in “cases that have freed more than 30 innocent people from prison and death row. But Republicans in the Judiciary Committee went after Morrison as if she had committed the crimes that her clients were convicted of — that they didn’t actually commit, either.”

Specifically, “They … pressed her on whether she felt guilty about freeing people from prison who had been convicted of violent crimes, glossing over the fact that they had been exonerated by DNA evidence.”

In Russia and other countries ruled by dictators guilt or innocence doesn’t matter. If the regime wants you jailed, for any reason, that’s where you go. It looks like that’s what Republicans want in America, too. I can’t vote for that. Can you?
