GOP legislatures are scrambling to restrict voting rights.
In Arizona, “Republicans have introduced a bill that would … [also] allow the state legislature to reject election results” (see story here).
(That’s not all. “The people who took video of police killing George Floyd and Eric Garner would have faced criminal charges in Arizona under legislation that won approval in the state House of Representatives with only Republican support,” see that story here).
There’s a simple answer to politicians abusing their citizens this way: Refuse to be ruled by them, and move to another state.
The U.S. has an acute labor shortage. Employers are scrambling for workers. States must compete for a constrained labor supply, and workers have choices about where to live and work. If those running a state respect you so little they’ll throw out your vote, and throw you in jail for filming cops abusing citizens, why would you stay in such a place?
If people leave, those states will lose population and representation in Congress. They’ll have smaller economies, less income, and they’ll deserve it. If the remaining voters (i.e., those allowed to vote) want that kind of government, it’s not your problem if you leave. If their employers find their “help wanted” ads ignored, too bad.
Other states, like Washington, will welcome you. My state is a pleasant place to live, has great schools and colleges, and plenty of good-paying jobs. Everyone here votes by mail, hassle-free, and ours vote count. And we don’t have restrictions on free speech or repressive laws here.
You should expect nothing less, and shouldn’t put up with less. Go someplace where your work is valued and your vote is respected.
