The Los Angeles Rams won a berth in Super Bowl LVI on Sunday, January 30, 2022. (The game will be played in California on Sunday, February 13, 2022.)
Standing around after their playoff victory, chewing the fat and mugging for cameras, were Gov. Gavin Newsom, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, and basketball luminary Magic Johnson (who pasted the photos, see below, on social media). With no masks.
Which, like, are mandatory in Los Angeles County. (The Los Angeles Times explains why here.)
As CNN political writer Chris Cillizza put it (here), “Which, well, not great. Rules for me and not for thee.” (Newsom previously caught flak for partying during lockdown, see that story here.) You could say it’s a photo-op gone sour.
Not missing the opportunity to make it worse, Garcetti laid this ad-lib on reporters: “When people ask for a photograph, I hold my breath …. There is a zero percent chance of infection from that.” Which, even if true, is immaterial.
Garcetti is not going to be president someday. He’s just not. He’s no good at leading by example.
