A sea lion was rescued from a San Diego freeway median strip 4 miles inland from the bay on Friday morning, January 7, 2020 (read story here). While wandering sea lions are fairly common in that area, this one really gets around:
“This sea lion has a history of adventurous travels, SeaWorld said, and was rescued in November near the San Diego International Airport on the bay. Last month, it was also spotted at Naval Base Point Loma, on the Mission Beach boardwalk, and near a deli adjacent to nearby Mission Bay, SeaWorld said.”
Apparently the SeaWorld staff were already well acquainted with this guy before he waddled across four lanes of State Route 94 on his way to Interstate 85. Several motorists came to a stop and blocked traffic to allow him to safely cross. (A collision with a 200-lb. sea lion wouldn’t be so good for the drivers behind them, either.) Then SeaWorld showed up with their truck, a cage, and nets. Watch the capture in the video below. The animal was taken to SeaWorld’s rescue center for evaluation.
