LOL at senile Capitol rioter’s excuses

A federal judge sentenced Gary Wickersham, an 81-year-old Army veteran from West Chester, Pennsylvania, to 90 days of home detention, 3 years of probation, and $2,500 of fines and restitution for his role in the Capitol riot, CNN and other news outlets reported on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 (read stories here and here).

Wickersham, who entered the Capitol immediately after it was breached and stayed inside for over 20 minutes, was reported to authorities by acquaintances to whom he bragged about his exploits.

Now read what he told the FBI agents who interviewed him:

“Wickersham admitted he went inside the building but claimed he was allowed to do so because he paid taxes. He also claimed that the riot was staged to cast Trump supporters in a bad light, … and that police were purposefully unprepared so that Trump supporters could storm the building and subsequently be arrested.”

LOL! Yes, dear readers, Trumpers are that stupid! Now, taking his age into consideration, you could attribute this nonsense to age-related mental deterioration, aka senility.

However, by the time he faced the judge, he had improved his story, no doubt after receiving some coaching from his lawyer:

“‘I regret doing it, I shouldn’t be in there … the remarks I made that it was public property, I don’t remember if I said that or not, I still shouldn’t have been in there,’ Wickersham said during the hearing, asking for ‘mercy’ from the judge and claiming he originally went to Washington, DC, because ‘you get bored’ sitting at home in old age. ‘What I did that day … I look at that as a dark blot in comparison to serving my country for three years back in the ’60s,’ he said, referring to his Army service.”
Yes, it’s a dark blot — on America’s history, on his personal history, and on his rap sheet (if he didn’t have one before, he does now). Trying to violently overthrow our elected government is, it’s fair to say, a “dark blot” all the way around. So far, most of those who’ve faced the music have told the courts it was a mistake (boy, was it ever) and they’re “sorry” (which is a real good thing to be, after screwing up like that, and a very smart thing to say to the judge when getting their just desserts).
But you’ve got to ask: What were these people thinking in the first place? Short answer: They weren’t. A box of rocks can do better.
