“As a catastrophic tornado approached [Mayfield, Kentucky] Friday, employees of a candle factory — which would later be destroyed — heard the warning sirens and wanted to leave the building. But at least five workers said supervisors warned employees that they would be fired if they left their shifts early.
“For hours, as word of the coming storm spread, as many as 15 workers beseeched managers to let them take shelter at their own homes, only to have their requests rebuffed, the workers said.”
“At least eight people died in the Mayfield Consumer Products factory, which makes scented candles. The facility was leveled, and all that is left is rubble. Photos and videos of its … mangled remains have become symbols of … Friday’s tornado system,” NBC News said on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, following the tornadoes that killed dozens of people.
NBC News named workers who claim managers wouldn’t let them leave, and were threatened with job loss if they did. The network also reported the company is denying the allegations and claims the workers were free to leave without risking their jobs. Read details here.
I guess we’ll see how that shakes out in court after the lawsuits are filed. Meanwhile, it’s hard for me to believe all those workers are lying.
