“When and If” was designed by John Alden and built in 1939 for George S. Patton, who came from a wealthy family. He said, “When the war is over, and if I live through it, Bea and I are going to sail her around the world.” As it turned out, he never used the yacht. It was gifted in 1972 by a Patton nephew to a school for dyslexic children, then sold in 1990 after being damaged in a hurricane to a private owner who repaired her, and sold again in 2012 to another private owner who did further restoration and now uses the yacht in the east coast charter trade.
