How NOT to hire a hitman

Steven Marcus Kelley, 48, of Monroe, Louisiana (photo), is awaiting trial on state charges of sexually assaulting his ex-wife’s daughters, ages 8 and 12, according to a local TV station (story here). He’s presumed innocent of this until found guilty in a court of law.

While sitting in jail on those charges, he “wrote to someone recommended by another inmate, offering $10,000 to shoot his ex-wife,” ABC News reported (details here). Unfortunately for him (and fortunately for the ex-wife), “the person who received the letter brought it to the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office.”

A federal jury convicted him of using the mails to commission murder. He faces up to 10 years for that, which doesn’t seem like enough. Maybe the state judge will get an opportunity to make up the difference.
