Gonzaga hoops coach’s DUI trouble

Gonzaga’s Mark Few

Spokane-area sports fans sure have their coach problems.

First there’s the WSU football coach’s high-profile vaccine defiance (see article here).

And now, “Gonzaga men’s basketball coach Mark Few’s driver’s license is suspended after Coeur d’Alene police cited him for a DUI,” a Seattle TV station reported on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 (see story here). It appears he’ll be taking Uber to games for a while.

Few (photo, right) issued a statement saying, in so many words, he made poor decisions and will “learn from this mistake” and never do it again. (That’s what they all say. Well, not all; Coach Rolovich isn’t saying much of anything about his refusal to get vaccinated.)

Gonzaga’s athletic director said the university respects “Coach Few’s right to privacy and will refrain from further comment at this time.” (That’s what university spokespeople always say when a high-profile coach makes an ass of himself.)

Coach Few probably isn’t in serious trouble. Gonzaga is a private school, not subject to the governor’s mandate that its employees are not to drive drunk in Idaho, if there is such a mandate. And it’s not like the school will fire him for a one-time lapse in judgment, given that “[Coach] Few, who has guided Gonzaga to the NCAA tournament in each of his 22 seasons as coach, is the winningest active coach by percentage at .834 (630-125). Under Few, the Zags have appeared in the national championship game twice, in 2017 and 2021.”

Who’s going to throw away a coach like that? Nobody.

And Rolovich? He’s a first-year coach with a 2-3 record, WSU is a public university, and there is a governor’s vaccinated mandate applicable to him. He doesn’t have Coach Few’s immunity, contrition, or winning record for protection when he makes an ass of himself.

Or Few’s lawyer. At a time like this, you need a lawyer who’ll tell you, “Say you’re sorry, you made a mistake, you’ll never do it again, then shut up and agree to whatever the judge says.” That’s a good lawyer, and a client in that kind of trouble who doesn’t listen to his lawyer isn’t just an ass, he’s a stupid ass.
