Congress has until October 18 to raise the debt ceiling. Many economists say failure to do so will be “catastrophic.” McConnell says Democrats have enough votes, and won’t provide a single Republican vote. If they don’t, whose fault will it be? It actually does not prevent all government spending, it can spend the taxes coming in, or any gap in the debt ceiling. But that means the White House could set priorities, something Congress people feel only Congress can do. [Edited comment.]
