The hard life of opinion writers

Wherein a Guardian journalist carries on, at length, about the sad lot of writers consigned to writing opinions.

Hey, it’s a paying job in journalism, and how many writers have that anymore? These days, anyone can write opinions, and lots of people do, mostly for little-read blogs (like this one*) and without getting paid for it (like yours truly).

Her second-most-memorable line: “Where once people could argue with one another and then go out for a drink, now it feels as if people just argue.” Now there’s someone who has her finger on the pulse of modern civilized society.

* According to Wikipedia, the Guardian‘s daily circulation is about 110,000. The-Ave.US’s readership is less than that.
