While nobody was looking, major league pitchers threw a bunch of no-hitters in the 2021 season — 9 so far, the most ever. That includes one by the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Tyler Gilbert on August 14 in his first major league appearance — making only the fourth pitcher to do that (story here). His pitching gem, the 8th this year, also broke the most-in-a-season record of 7 set in 1990 and repeated in 1991, 2012, and 2015. Then on September 11 the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes extended that to 9 against the hapless Cleveland Indians, striking out 14 batters and walking one, although pitched only 8 innings and closer Josh Hader finished the job (read story here). The video below has the highlights of that game. Perfect games? Not this year. The last one was by Seattle Mariners’ Felix Hernandez in 2012 (highlights video here) — the third that year!
