“The head of Canada’s opposition Conservatives on Sunday scrapped a campaign promise to eliminate a ban on some assault weapons,” Reuters reported on Sunday, September 5, 2021 (read story here).
The Conservatives, led by Erin O’Toole, are challenging Canadian P.M. Justin Trudeau in a September 20 election. Trudeau has accused O’Toole of “cozying up” to the gun lobby.
“I want to make my position on firearms perfectly clear,’ O’Toole told reporters. “The present ban on a number of [assault-type] firearms … will remain in place.” The ban includes AR-15s. His statement puts both of Canada’s major political parties on record as supporting a continued assault weapon ban in that country.
The U.S. has 6.3 times as many gun deaths, adjusted for population (details here), as Canada, which has stricter gun laws.
