Michael Fanone, perhaps the most visible of the D.C. police officers injured while defending the Capitol on January 6, 2021, “testified Tuesday that during the insurrection he was tased, beaten, and at risk of being stripped of and killed with his own firearm,” AOL News reported on Wednesday, July 28,2021 (link below).
While he was testifying, an anonymous caller left a voicemail on his phone. You can listen to it here (beginning at 6:14 of the video), if you have a cast-iron stomach. After complaining the election was “stolen from Trump,” the caller makes physical threats and calls Fanone a laundry list of vile names.
Later that day, on TV, Fanone mentioned he “suffered a traumatic brain injury, heart attack, concussion and was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder” as a result of defending the seat of our government and members of Congress from people like that caller.
I’m not saying all Trump supporters are like this. But some are. That one is. And Trump’s rhetoric attracts and encourages them. Many other people believe, with ample justification, the attack on the Capitol wouldn’t have occurred if Trump hadn’t incited it. Majorities of both houses of Congress voted to remove him from office for that. But even today, some Republicans in Congress try to pretend nothing happened on January 6, like this guy.
This, unfortunately, is what the Republican Party is today. For the good of the country, and their own good, Republicans need to stop this behavior and go back to championing small business, limited government, family values, and individual responsibility like this used to do. But don’t hold your breath.
