“A 98-year-old World War II veteran, Pete DuPré, played the Star-Spangled Banner on the harmonica” before the US women’s soccer team played Mexico on Monday, July 6, 2021.

While DuPré played, some of the players turned away from DuPré “to face the American flag — as did much of the crowd.”

Now, rightwing fabulists are spreading tales through outlets like Daily Caller, a rightwing propaganda website, that the players turned their backs on DuPré out of disrespect for this elderly veteran. That’s a lie. (Read story here.)

The internet, in fact, is full of rightwing lies. I won’t even try to catalog all the photoshopped images, fabricated stories, and falsehoods the rightwing propaganda shops churn out; they’re countless. A legitimate political movement doesn’t have to do that; if they have honest points to make, and the brains to make them, none of this is necessary.

Respecting our flag isn’t disrespectful. I’ll tell you what’s disrespectful. Posing for nudie magazines with the flag draped around your naked body (and dragging on the floor) is disrespectful; using the flag as a spear to attack cops with is disrespectful.

Rightwingers, in addition to being liars, are massive hypocrites.

Also, disrespectful to the flag and the high ideals it stands for, when they exploit it for monetary gain, use it as a weapon while trying to overthrow our government, and use it as an excuse to disparage our Olympic Team athletes.
