An American reporter detained by authorities while covering an anti-government protest has been freed.
Worldwide, journalists are arrested by the hundreds every year, and 50 were killed last year (see figures here). Last month, Belarus’ strongman hijacked an airliner and seized a journalist on board. Domestically, with Trump trying to turn the U.S. into a Third World country, detentions of journalists soared 1200% in a single year.
“I’d like to thank my family and friends, my … colleagues and people … nationally and globally who … supported me,” Andrea May Sahouri, a reporter for an Iowa newspaper, said. “We are grateful that the jury saw this case as the unjust prosecution of a reporter who was doing her job,” the Des Moines Register said in a statement after a jury threw out the charges against her.
