The Justice Department is dropping its legal actions against John Bolton, including its efforts to confiscate royalties from his book about Trump’s “diplomatic bungling,” CNN reported on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. Read story here.
Trump’s two primary motivations are revenge and greed, probably in that order. He turned against Bolton after the latter refused to be his lackey (details here) and then wrote things about him that weren’t nice (but true).
I’m not a Bolton fan. Those two deserve each other. But I’m even less a fan of censorship. And it didn’t bother me a bit when Bolton squealed on his ex-boss, a guy he never should’ve worked for in the first place. Nobody should work for Trump, in the same sense that nobody should work for Putin or any other authoritarian bully.
But the worst thing about Bolton is that he’s a chickenhawk, one of those disgusting creatures who dodged the Vietnam draft and became a warmonger who tries to start wars and send other people’s children to die in them. His sharpest disagreement with Trump was over the latter’s refusal to start a war with Iran.
I won’t buy Bolton’s book, because I won’t put one penny in this slimesucker’s pocket. And now that both he and Trump are out of power, hopefully for good, there’s no reason to read or pay attention to his opinion about anything. And I really don’t care what Trump or anybody else does to him.
However, it doesn’t bother me that Biden’s Justice Department just handed Bolton a $2 million gift (i.e. his book advance), plus whatever royalties the book earns. Better that than Biden’s DoJ carrying out Trump’s program of revenge, even against one of his own former aides. It’s a matter of values and priorities.
