White paint reflects sunlight and solar heat; whiter paint reflects more sunlight and solar heat. So Purdue University researchers came up with the whitest paint of all, which they “estimate that if 1,000 square feet of roof were covered with this paint, it would provide a cooling power of 10 kilowatts, more powerful than the central air conditioners used by most houses.” That could save a lot of electricity, and while it might not save the planet from global warming unless you paint whole continents, it could have a dramatic impact on summertime utility bills.
