Perhaps the cops should only be issued Tasers most days of their career. With some justification it is entirely too easy to be an armchair cop. The majority of police never shoot their service weapon or taser in their career. Police who shoot or tase someone are a minority and most only have one incident in their career. In the heat of the moment mistakes can happen. It is going to be difficult for a prosecutor to get a conviction unless the officer wishes to plead guilty. The event is a tragic accident, and going for a manslaughter charge is political, and a good defense attorney will at minimum explore calling the charge as politically motivated, and call the incident a tragic accident.
You say the manslaughter charge is “political,” but what do you think you’ll be charged with, if you accidentally kill someone? Say, a hunting accident? If it’s intentional, it’s murder, but if it’s negligent, it’s manslaughter. You were in the military, so you know there are consequences for screwups; and the bigger the screwup, the bigger the consequences.
