Postmaster’s apology is ludicrous

“Postmaster Louis DeJoy offered a public apology before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Wednesday for recent mail delivery delays during the peak holiday season,” The Hill reported on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Read story here.

That’s nonsense. Those delays were intentional, were engineered to suppress mail voting, and DeJoy — a Republican and Trump donor — was appointed by Trump to carry out that specific mission.

DeJoy (photo, left), wealthy CEO of a logistics firm, wants to keep the Postmaster job. That’s ridiculous. His conduct was overt, egregious, and obvious. Last summer, in my neighborhood as elsewhere, mailboxes were removed, and for months I had to drive several miles to mail bill payments and letters. The mailboxes reappeared after the election. DeJoy also ordered removal and dismantling of mail sorting machines.

The impacts went beyond interference with mail voting. Many veterans and senior citizens found delivery of their mail-order prescriptions delayed, in some cases endangering their health. This was done for the purpose of helping Trump win the election.

DeJoy was a willing and eager participant in a conspiracy to subvert our democracy. He should be indicted, not retained. But President Biden can’t fire him. That authority rests with a board. However, Biden decides who serves on that board, and there are calls from congressional Democrats to fire the entire board (see story here). So far, though, Biden has only nominated people to fill 3 of the 4 current boad vacancies (that story here).

Biden cannot remove any of the governors. I suppose they can be impeached. They get$30,000 a year plus $300 a day for 42 days.

The Governors can replace the Postmaster. Probably not enough votes yet, maybe they can all get along and work things out. In any case not more than 5 can be members of the same political party.

The holiday issues had nothing to do with the election, and the whole election interference is a bit of a stretch since the post office has gotten good marks for the election. If you want to argue DeJoy wants to privatize the post office and is working on that goal, well that maybe closer to the truth. Certainly not a Ben Franklin wanting to get circulars, newspapers delivered to the public even at a loss. Franklin thought this was a public good for a republic founded as a democracy.

You’re wrong. The president can fire the board. No election interference? If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge and swampland for sale.
