Covid relief (or “stimulus”) stalled in Congress for months last year because of Republican intransigence, and finally a stripped-down $900 billion emerged at the end of the year. (See recap here.)
Most economists agree more is needed. President Biden wants another $1.9 trillion. One of the main sticking points in last year’s negotiations was GOP refusal to help struggling state and local governments. Biden’s proposal includes $350 billion of government aid, $170 billion for schools, and $20 billion for transit agencies. (For more details, go here.) Republicans hate it.
So here’s the new Democratic strategy: Screw the Republicans, we’re the majority now, and we don’t need them.
