A Columbus, Ohio, cop with a history of complaints killed a black man with a cellphone on Tuesday, December 22, 2020, the second killing in Columbus this month of unarmed black men by white cops.
Officer Adam Coy and a fellow officer had their body cameras turned off, in apparent violation of department policy, while responding to a nonemergency call of someone repeatedly turning a car engine on and off.
They turned their cameras on after shooting Andre Hill, but made no effort to render medical aid or assist him. Hill, 47 (photo, left), “was known to the residents at the home,” the Columbus mayor said at a press conference. “He was expected. He was not an intruder, he had not committed any crimes.”
The police chief immediately suspended Coy pending investigation of the killing. The mayor called for his immediate firing.
