Biden expected to pick Cindy McCain for U.K. ambassador

President-Elect Joe Biden will offer Cindy McCain, who helped him win Arizona, the job of U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, the Times of London reported on Saturday, November 28, 2020. Read story here.

“Biden became the first Democrat to win Arizona since 1996. Some Democrats say it was endorsements from McCain and former Sen. Jeff Flake — two respected Republicans from the state — that pushed Biden over the top,” The Hill said (story here). In an earlier story, published on Nov. 11, the day after major media outlets declared Biden the winner, The Hill suggested Biden was “signaling he might reach across the aisle to name Republicans to a Cabinet post and other key slots in his administration” (read that story here).

Back in September, when McCain endorsed Biden, a disgruntled Trump tweeted,

I HARDLY KNOW CINDY MCCAIN APART FROM HAVING PUT HER ON A COMMITTEE AT HER HUSBAND’S REQUEST. JOE BIDEN WAS JOHN MCCAIN’S LAPDOG. SO MANY BAD CHOICES ON COUNTLESS WARS & THE V.A., WHICH I INTRODUCED FROM A HORROR PRESENT TO HIGH APPROVAL. BY NO MEANS A FAN OF JOHN. CINDY CAN HAVE SLEEPY JOE! — DONALD J. TRUMP @REALDONALDTRUMP) SEPTEMBER 23, 2020

(Read about that here.)

It makes sense. McCain isn’t a politician, per se, but she runs a major Anheuser-Busch distributorship, was involved with her late husband’s political career (which included a run for president), and is widely respected for her humanitarian work. Appointing her would accomplish a number of things: Reward her work for Biden in Arizona, acknowledge Republicans who oppose Trump (and thereby help them repossess their party), and demonstrate that Biden is both a moderate leader and is willing to work with Republicans (and have Republicans work for him).
