Trump’s antics are possible only because of other Republicans, and they’re starting to peel off from his futile charge against on Biden’s election victory.
“It’s over,” Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) said on CNN Sunday. Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) compared Trump’s behavior to a “banana republic.” Chris Christie called Rudy Giuliani and his cohorts a “national embarrassment.” Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) publicly offered congratulations to “President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.” Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said Trump should respect “the sanctity of our electoral process.” Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) said the transition to a Biden presidency should begin. John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, accused him of “throwing rocks through windows” and said his actions are “playing into the hands of our adversaries.”
Meanwhile, infighting on Trump’s legal team, led by Giuliani, erupted into the open. On Sunday, Sidney Powell was kicked off the team for peddling a crazy conspiracy theory that claims long-dead Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez stole the election for Biden. Nearly all of their lawsuits have been thrown out by the courts, and some of the lawyers have been rebuked by judges for bringing baseless cases and demanding to throw out millions of votes.
