“President Donald Trump asserted … that his campaign is ready to claim victory in the Badger State despite unofficial results showing him trailing by more than 20,000 votes and the state’s top election official dismissing allegations of voting irregularities,” a Wisconsin TV station reported on Wednesday, November 11, 2020, adding that “Republicans are grasping for ways to reverse Joe Biden’s win in Wisconsin.”
Well, here’s their chance. Trump currently trails in Wisconsin by 20,546 votes. For a measly $7.9 million, they order a recount of all 3,240,692 ballots (read story here). And why not? According to a story in a Milwaukee newspaper published on Nov. 7, 2020,
“President Donald Trump is raising money for a recount in Wisconsin following his defeat to former Vice President Joe Biden, but the money could be used to pay down the president’s campaign debt instead.”
(Read story here.) So, he’s got the cash, right? (But note the fine print.)

When I was a kid and somebody said, “I’ll bet you …” we’d say, “put up or shut up!” A statewide recount typically changes the result by a few hundred votes, so I’m guessing the money raised for a recount will be used to pay down campaign debt instead. Meanwhile, the lawsuits filed by Wisconsin Trump supporters alleging voting irregularities are dropping like dead locusts (read story here).
Update (11/18/20): The Trump campaign has decided to pay $3 million for recounts in Wisconsin’s two largest counties, both of which are heavily Democratic (Milwaukee County has a lot of black people, and Dane County has a lot of state employees and college students). This means they won’t be recounting GOP-leaning counties, where they’re most likely to pick up votes. Don’t be surprised if their supporters’ three million bucks ends up increasing Biden’s lead in Wisconsin by a few hundred votes.
