SUNDAY REVELATIONS: HYPOCRISY IN STATUES

DOES INERRANCY REQUIRE HYPOCRISY?

The Vatican unveiled its first new statue for St. Peter’s in 300 years.

To be honest the statue seems to me to be fairly ugly .. a monstrous brick of bronzed poor people, crowded together amidst the glorified statues of saints and popes.  The message, to me, is of condescension.

Pope Francis unveiled “Angels Unaware,” a sculpture by the Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz representing displaced people throughout history, on Sunday in St. Peter’s Square.

Then I wondered, why doen;t the Vatican ever have a statue commemorating its own horrors.  So I added one to the Basilica of St. Peter.  Using the miracle of Photoshop,  I transported a wonderful sculpture fROm Alabama’s lunching museum to the holy precincts. I must apologize because none of the sources I found for the statue identified the sculptor.

I wonder though, isn’t this the same Pope Francis who recently sainted Father Serra?  Has Pope Francis wandered through the Vatican’s art troves to find statues of his predecessors who, during the inquisition, laid the basis for slaves as less than human by the doctrine of the drop of blood?
