Denver shooting victim was a biker with a criminal record and had a gun

The shooting at dueling protests in Denver on Saturday, October 10, 2020, is one of the most thoroughly documented fatal confrontations ever. There are numerous videos and more than 70 photographs depicting the exact sequence of events.

Lee Keltner, the man killed by a security guard in Denver on Saturday, was a biker with a long criminal record, and threatened physical violence against the journalist the guard was protecting, according to news reports.

KUSA, the Denver TV station that hired the guard, reported on Tuesday, October 13, 2020, that Keltner was “a part of Colorado’s Motorcycle community” and the “Biker Down Charity has started a fundraiser for his family” (read story here).

KDVR, another Denver TV station, also described Keltner as someone associated with “the biker community” and reported that “Colorado court records show Keltner’s criminal history dates back several decades. His most recent charge came in 2016 for Disorderly Conduct/Fighting in Public. In 2008, he pleaded guilty to violating a protection order” (read story here).

An attorney for the TV producer the security guard was protecting told a media interviewer that Keltner saw the TV camera, approached his client and told him to put it down, and threatened to “f*** him up.” The attorney said Matt Dolloff, the security guard, then got between Keltner and the TV producer to protect his client, and that’s when Keltner slapped Dolloff and used bear spray on him. Read that story here.

Dolloff’s attorney has said “Dolloff saw Keltner reaching into his shirt and feared for his safety” (read about that here). Police recovered two guns at the scene, one of which was in a holster under Keltner’s shirt, and a tweet (below, source here) appears to show Dolloff reaching for it as if to disarm Keltner. This sequence strongly indicates Dolloff knew Keltner had a gun before shooting him.
