A Proud Boys rally held in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, September 26, 2020, attracted “numbers far below what they’d projected, and then began to disperse after less than two hours,” Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) reported (here).
The group expected 20,000 but only 200 showed up, according to NBC News (story here), and began leaving after 90 minutes of speeches, according to Oregon Live (story here). A counter-demonstration a few miles away attracted a larger crowd.
Rain fell on the gatherings, possibly discouraging turnout.
Oregon Live said about half the people attending the Proud Boys rally carried weapons or wore tactical gear, but few had face masks. NBC News reported some of the attendees had guns.
Several bystanders near the Proud Boys rally were assaulted, including a black man who was knocked down and kicked by a white assailant who’s easily identifiable on another video. That video and others can be viewed here.
Police said they’re investigating the assaults. Police also cited several Proud Boys attendees for license plate violations, and arrested at least one for weapons violations. Overall, the police appeared to be in control, and the heavy police presence appears to have prevented major disorder.
