An Everett, Washington, gang member “accused of trafficking in crack cocaine was sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison Friday,” December 5, 2008, the Everett Herald reported. “Prosecutors say Darwin Caldwell, 30, … sold crack cocaine” and “also was accused of illegally possessing a handgun.” The paper added, “He has five prior felony convictions, including assault.” Read that story here.
Eleven years later Caldwell, now 42, was out of lockup but on electronic monitoring. That wasn’t enough. On Saturday, Aug. 29, 2020, he drove a car 80 mph over a 25-year-old bicyclist, who’s in critical condition, and literally inside a condo, where a 97-year-old woman (photo, right) in bed was shoved clear through the wall into the adjoining room. Caldwell was found staggering in the yard, mumbling that someone had been chasing him. Read this sad story here.
Caldwell is charged with vehicle assault and vehicular homicide. He probably got traffic tickets, too, for speeding, no license, and no insurance.
All suspects are presumed innocent until found guilty again in a court of law, even when they’re so guilty the sheer weight of their police files breaks the table legs in the courtroom.
