Wrong black man violently arrested after fighting off San Antonio police

A black man accosted by police in a San Antonio apartment complex on Friday, Aug. 28, 2020, resisted arrest and was violently thrown into a squad car. At least one of the arresting officers is black.

Police responding to a “strangulation family violence” call from the complex told Mathias Ometu, 33, he matched the suspect’s description and attempted to take him into custody. The actual suspect, who had left the scene, also was wanted on a felony warrant.

Ometu refused to identify himself and “became aggressive,” kicking an officer in the face, according to police. But witnesses said he was calm for several minutes after being handcuffed, and only began to resist when they pushed him into the patrol car.

Other officers arrived on the scene. Shortly thereafter, the victim told officers Ometu wasn’t the suspect. He was arrested anyway for assaulting the arresting officers.

Read story here. Comment: It’s never a good idea to kick a cop, even when they’re wrong. That’s a crime in itself. Obviously, he should have identified himself and let the process play out. It would have been cleared up in due time. But black people’s fear of police must be taken into account when judging these situations.
