Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad closes

The Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, which was largely operated by volunteers until 2016, when it was taken over by the company that operates Colorado’s historic Durango & Silverton R,R., has ceased operations.

American Heritage Railways, Inc., said the Elbe-based tourist attraction was never profitable during its ownership, and Covid-19’s impact on its finances forced its closure.  AHR said it will seek a buyer.

AHR rebranded the attraction as the Mt. Rainier Railroad and Logging Museum. Its collection of steam engines consisted mostly of rare logging locomotives, and it operated excursion trains on former Weyerhauser track now owned by the City of Tacoma.
