Mueller speaks

Special Counsel Robert Mueller broke his silence Wednesday morning, and in a 10-minute press conference, told reporters:

  1. His investigation is over, he’s leaving the Justice Department, and returning to private life;
  2. If he testifies before Congress, he will only repeat what’s in the report;
  3. His investigation did not exonerate Trump; but, under DoJ policies, a sitting president can’t be indicted; and
  4. It’s Congress’s job to follow up when a president commits crimes in office.

Mueller indicated he won’t speak about his investigation or report again, and after concluding his remarks, declined to take questions from reporters. Afterward, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) characterized Mueller’s findings as follows:

Russia interfered in the 2016 election, Trump’s campaign accepted their help, and Trump did everything he could to obstruct investigations into their interference,

and again called on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, as a matter of “principle above politics,” even if it hurts Democrats politically and Senate Republicans refuse to hold him accountable.
