David Thouless — Nobel laureate and UW professor emeritus — dies at age 84 |
David James Thouless, UW professor emeritus and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2016, died in Cambridge in the U.K. on April 6. Thouless was a theoretical physicist whose most well-known work focused on the properties of matter in extremely thin layers
As usual, this loss will not be commemorated by the UW. After all, a Nobel Winner contributes nothing to our athletic programs. The great celebration of the UW’s 150th anniversary managed not to commemorate any of the UW great faculty .. artists, writers, historians, Nobel laureates, economists, political leaders ….. who cares? |
If only Professor Thouless had led the football team onto victory. Or even the rowing team. We would have laid him out on a Viking longboat in Red Square at Wester Washington University. (Torching optional.)
While not popular with all alumni the cancellation of the football program really has benefitted the remaining sports programs, and burnished academics.
I am not against football, but it is demeaning when the UW fails this way.
