James Alex Fields Jr., who drove a car into a crowd during the August 2017 white nationalist riots in Charlottesville, was found guilty of state charges of murdering Heather Heyer and maliciously wounding 8 others. The jury that rejected his self-defense claims recommended a sentence of life plus 419 years and a half-million dollar fine. Fields will be formally sentenced in March 2019; assuming the judge adopts the jury’s recommendation, he’ll never get out, and he still faces federal hate crime charges.
