Arkansas Republicans are running radio ads targeting black voters which claim that Planned Parenthood was created “to exterminate black folks” and “white Democrats will be lynching black folk again” if a Democratic congressional candidate wins. His Republican opponent denounced the ads, sponsored by an independent PAC, as “outrageous” and “appalling.” Read story here.
These smears are distortions of history. The “extermination” claim is based on the fact that Margaret Sanger, the founder of a birth control movement that later evolved into Planned Parenthood, advocated eugenics, an early-1900s pseudo-scientific movement to improve human genetics, before it was discredited by the Nazis. The South was Democratic during the lynching era, but that changed when Nixon’s “southern strategy” invited southern racists into the Republican Party in the 1960s, where they’ve remained ever since.
With midterm elections now just three weeks away, Republicans are resorting to vote suppression efforts and extreme rhetoric in numerous races, perhaps a sign of their desperation. However, all the public outrage against Trump and his perverted GOP will be for naught if voters don’t turn out and vote on election day.
