Sharply increasing the tax burden on struggling students will bring in about $65 billion of revenue over 10 years, a pittance compared to the $2.6 trillion-plus of tax relief flowing to billionaires and corporations. How can this be interpreted as anything other than a mean-spirited attack against higher education? Republicans are known to disdain science and learning.
