26 dead, 20 hurt in Texas church shooting
Devin Patrick Kelley, 26, a wife beater expelled from the Air Force 3 years ago, killed 26 people including 14 children and wounded 20 more in a premeditated attack Sunday morning against a small rural Texas church sometimes attended by his current and former in-laws. It’s the worst mass shooting in Texas history. The victims range in age from 18 months to 72. Police say Kelley stormed the church wearing body armor and firing an assault rifle. He was shot by a neighbor, who then flagged down a motorist, and the two men gave chase until Kelley crashed his car and committed suicide. More guns and tactical gear were found in his car. He clearly was mentally ill; ex-girlfriends describe him as a stalker and “very sick in the head,” and he had been arrested for animal cruelty. Kelley was denied a Texas gun permit because of his Air Force court martial conviction for domestic violence, and police are looking into how he obtained the guns.
Meanwhile, if Trump wants to blame mental illness to take the heat off easy access to military-style guns, there’s this …
“President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law … rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun. … Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation … following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School …. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.”
and this …
“Trump went out of his way to call the church shooting in Sutherland, Texas a mental health issue, but his budget makes huge cuts in mental health programs, on top of those with mental health issues who would lose their health insurance if Obamacare is repealed.”
His argument seems hypocritical to me.
