A New York woman who paid United Airlines over $3,000 and 60,000 American Express points for a business-class seat on a Newark to London flight, then was forcibly removed from her seat to economy class, has sued the airline for $150,000. United even refused to refund her business-class upgrade fees, which cost her about $1,650, offering her only a $750 voucher.
Other United passengers also have reported being bumped from business class; for example, “Geoff Fearns, president of TriPacific Capital Advisors, told the Los Angeles Times a United employee threatened to remove him from his business-class seat in handcuffs … unless he left to make room for ‘somebody more important.’ and a “94-year-old woman was allegedly moved from business class to economy on a 16-hour flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne, because her traveling companion was in the economy section,” according to Bloomberg News.
